Getting a Safe Routes to School Program up and running might seem like a
difficult task, and one that would require funding that many organizations or
community members do not have. However, by gathering the right people together,
and harnessing their enthusiasm and energy, you can succeed in launching an
effective SRTS program in your community with zero funds.
This 60 minute
presentation shares the successes of the Columbia, Missouri based organization,
PedNet’s Safe Routes to School Program. You will learn how to overcome starting
with zero funds to accomplish things such as:
1. Walk-to-school days
2. A Walking School Bus Program
3. Pedestrian Safety and Bicycle
Proficiency Courses
4. Bike Teams
The PedNet Coalition was started
as an all-volunteer,
grass-roots group with the goal of promoting healthy
lifestyles,
economic vitality, and a sustainable transportation system,
through
an increased emphasis on active modes of travel for local
journeys. In eight years, more than 6,500 local residents have
signed
up in support of this vision, public advocacy efforts have led
to new
bike/ped/wheelchair friendly street design standards being
adopted, and the
City of Columbia has been awarded a large, federal
grant for the
non-motorized infrastructure. In 2003, PedNet started
a SRTS program in
order to concentrate its encouragement and education efforts on children and
families.
At the start of the call, Katy Jones of the National Center
for Safe Routes to School will present a couple tips on how to work (at no
direct cost) with the
media to promote your program and provide a case study
on how a SRTS
program was able to co-promote with a local news station.
This webinar is part of the Safe Routes Coaching Action Network Webinar
Series, developed by America Walks and the National Center for Safe Routes to
School.
